Native American Literature

EQ: For the indians it seem like that had a change to achieve the american dream but the white man came and took it over for them selves. It seems that the indians were living the american dream untill there white man came.

Indian Shoes
by: Wazi Nagi
These shoes are old and worn
These shoes are old and torn,
These shoes have seen many miles
While tears haunted Indian styles.
These shoes have seen the years
These shoes know the Trail of Tears,
As many wore away
These shoes realized the need to stay.
These shoes are old and pitiful.
Their roads were cruel and scornful
These shoes have walked in pain
They endured life with nothing to gain.
These shoes are Indian shoes
And as the end of life nears
These shoes will fade away
They walked the Trail of Tears one day.

DIARY

Dear Diary,

03/18/08

Today was sad day, we learn that hte white men that have came into our community is moving us to the west. We been through too much, now these people want to take over everything that we have. How could they just come here and take over, its not fair. Im so angry, i cant believe that they think that they can come up and mess up our tradations and mess up the way we work things.

-dt.

REFLECTION

This poem makes me sad, because it shows how the indians have been through alot and for the white man to come in there setting and kick them out is sad. This poem talks about the pain the indians have been through. It also shows they felt. They used shoes to show how the audience how it feels to walk in there shoes . Reading this poem makes you see how they felt where they were invaded by the white man.

Bradford - "Of Plymouth Plantation"

"There was a proud and very profane young man, one of the seamen, of a lusty, able body, which made him the more haughty; he would always be contemning the poor people in their sickness and cursing them daily with grievous execrations; and did not let to tell them that he hoped to help to cast half of them overboard before they came to their journey’s end, and to make merry with what they had; and if he Were by any gently reproved, he would curse and swear most bitterly. But it pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner, and so was himself the first that was thrown overboard. Thus his curses light on his own head, and it was an astonishment to all his fellows for they noted it to be the just hand of God upon him."

A crew of people our on a journey to cape cod. On the way there encounter some difficulties like a everyone on the ship getting sick and there life was endanger by a man who was going to deceives them but ended dying. But then that ave difficulties with there boat and then finally ended up on cape cod. They ended up trying to take over the land and pushing the Indians out of there land.

I cant to see the beautiful thing in America, im very excited to see what we can accomplish over there. We been having some difficulties getting there but we will be there soon. I hope everything works out.
Its been a couple of hours and we have finally made it, im happy, and is ready to explore this place. Bu who are these people who are here. I thought we were we going to be the first to discover America but i guess im wrong. My leader said were making them move but i kinda feel bad about it because they were here first. Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672)

LOVE

holding hands

"To My Dear and Loving Husband"
by Anne Bradstreet
Webtext prepared by Ann Woodlief
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay,
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere
That when we live no more, we may live ever

Reflection:
This woman love is all she has, she loves her husband so much. She uses lines that you would be like that was deep "Or all the riches that the East doth hold." (Bradstreet).Thats shows that there love is what other lack. There love is her world and she wouldnt care if she didnt have anything else.

Dear Diary,
ahh, i just love my husband so much, im here for him anytime he needs me, I stand by him with everything. If he need me im right there. I just love him so much. And he loves me too, i need him and he needs me too. I have his back on any decison he makes, through the ups and downs im here.

Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672)

EQ: In this i think the American dream was achieve for these people because the relied on god so much that nothing could make them un-happy. They stay positives and optimistic.

hearts

"A Letter to Her Husband, Absent Upon Public Employment"
Anne Bradstreet

My head, my heart, mine eyes, my life, nay, more,
My joy, my magazine of earthly store,
If two be one, as surely thou and I,
How stayest thou there, wilst I at Ipswich lie?
So many steps, head from the heart to sever,
If but a neck, soon should we be together,
I, like the Earth this season, mourn in black,
My Sun is gone so far in's zodiac,
Whom whilst I 'joyed, nor storms, nor frost I felt,
His warmth such frigid colds did cause to melt.
My chilled limbs now numbed lie forlorn;
Return, return, sweet Sol, from Capricorn,
In this dead time, alas, what can I more
Than view those fruits which through thy heat I bore?
Which sweet contentment yield me for a space,
True living pictures of their father's face.
O strange effect! now thou art southward gone,
I weary grow the tedious day so long;
But when thou northward to me shalt return,
I wish my Sun may never set, but burn
Within the Cancer of my glowing breast,
The welcome house of him my dearest guest.
Where ever, ever stay, and go not thence,
Till nature's sad decree shall call thee hence;
Flesh of thy flesh, bone of thy bone,
I here, thou there, but both but one.
Reflection
This woman stands by her husband no matter what there going through. Her love for him is so deep that, she has a state of mind that it no me and you its we. What happens to you happens to me. I called that a real woman, someone who stands by there man.
burning house
Hope. :)

Verses upon the Burning of our House

In silent night when rest I took,
For sorrow near I did not look,
I waken'd was with thund'ring noise
And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice.
That fearful sound of "fire" and "fire,"
Let no man know is my Desire.
I starting up, the light did spy,
And to my God my heart did cry
To straighten me in my Distress
And not to leave me succourless.
Then coming out, behold a space
The flame consume my dwelling place.
And when I could no longer look,
I blest his grace that gave and took,
That laid my goods now in the dust.
Yea, so it was, and so 'twas just.
It was his own; it was not mine.
Far be it that I should repine,
He might of all justly bereft
But yet sufficient for us left.
When by the Ruins oft I past
My sorrowing eyes aside did cast
And here and there the places spy
Where oft I sate and long did lie.
Here stood that Trunk, and there that chest,
There lay that store I counted best,
My pleasant things in ashes lie
And them behold no more shall I.
Under the roof no guest shall sit,
Nor at thy Table eat a bit.
No pleasant talk shall 'ere be told
Nor things recounted done of old.
No Candle 'ere shall shine in Thee,
Nor bridegroom's voice ere heard shall bee.
In silence ever shalt thou lie.
Adieu, Adieu, All's Vanity.
Then straight I 'gin my heart to chide:
And did thy wealth on earth abide,
Didst fix thy hope on mouldring dust,
The arm of flesh didst make thy trust?
Raise up thy thoughts above the sky
That dunghill mists away may fly.
Thou hast a house on high erect
Fram'd by that mighty Architect,
With glory richly furnished
Stands permanent, though this be fled.
It's purchased and paid for too
By him who hath enough to do.
A price so vast as is unknown,
Yet by his gift is made thine own.
There's wealth enough; I need no more.
Farewell, my pelf; farewell, my store.
The world no longer let me love;
My hope and Treasure lies above.
Reflection:

In Anne Bradstreet’s poetry, the speaker process from scared to vain to hopeful to show the path of her poetry. In this poem she talks about how her house is burn down and how shes left with nothing but remembers that god is beside her so she will be ok. During this time peroid everyone refer to god when they had a problem to look on the bright side of things.

Edward Taylor

Huswifery
by Edward Taylor

Make me, O Lord, thy Spinning Wheele compleat;
Thy Holy Worde my Distaff make for mee.
Make mine Affections thy Swift Flyers neate,
And make my Soule thy holy Spoole to bee.
My Conversation make to be thy Reele,
And reele the yarn thereon spun of thy Wheele.

Make me thy Loome then, knit therein this Twine:
And make thy Holy Spirit, Lord, winde quills:
Then weave the Web thyselfe. The yarn is fine.
Thine Ordinances make my Fulling Mills.
Then dy the same in Heavenly Colours Choice,
All pinkt with Varnish't Flowers of Paradise.

Then cloath therewith mine Understanding, Will,
Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory;
My Words and Actions, that their shine may fill
My wayes with glory and thee glorify.
Then mine apparell shall display before yee
That I am Cloathd in Holy robes for glory.

Reflection:In the poem “Huswifey” Edward Taylor expresses his desire for gods prayer grace through use if extended metaphor, repetition and diction. He also explained how he need gods beside him and needs to stay close to his faith. Its almost like he was praying to god about him not staying to close the faith and he need his help.

Jonathan Edwards

"They are as great heaps of light chaff before the whirlwind; or large quantities of dry stubble before devouring flames. We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; so it is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by: thus easy is it for God, when he pleases, to cast his enemies down to hell. What are we, that we should think to stand before him, at whose rebuke the earth trembles, and before whom the rocks are thrown down?"

Reflection: In this pa sage Edwards explain how you have to do exactly what god planned for you to do so you can go to heaven. Hes like if you dont follow god your going to hell. He was like straight foreword, there no other choice follow god,or hell.

Diary Entry: As being apart of the church i think you should follow god. You shouldnt do anything else but follow him because you will just end up in hell if you dont fall god. There show be no doubt that you shouldnt follow god. God is the answer to everythin, whether is a problem or someting good happens to you. You should follow god in everything you do.You will go to hell if dont follow god.

Olaudah Equiano

EQ: For slaves , I dont think the american dream was ever ment to be achieved by african americans. They were born into slavery, which prevented them to achive the dream. I also think the america dream was planned for only the white man to achieve.

"I think the windlass, and tied my feet, while the other flogged me severely. I had never experienced any thing of this kind before, and although not being used to the water, I naturally feared that element the first time I saw it, yet, nevertheless, could I have got over the nettings, I would have jumped over the side, but I could not; and besides, the crew used to watch us very closely who were not chained down to the decks, lest we should leap into the water; and I have seen some of these poor African prisoners most severely cut, for attempting to do so, and hourly whipped for not eating. This indeed was often the case with myself. In a little time after, amongst the poor chained men, I found some of my own nation, which in a small degree gave ease to my mind. I inquired of these what was to be done with us? they gave me to understand, we were to be carried to these white people's country to work for them. I then was a little revived, and thought, if it were no worse than working, my situation was not so desperate; but still I feared I should be put to death, the white people looked and acted, as I thought, in so savage a manner; for I had never seen among any people such instances of brutal cruelty;"

Reflection:
The story makes me very sad. I dont understand how people could treat other people this way. Its crazy, how was slavery eve created in the first place. To read this story make u almost feel there pain because equiano explained what happen with so much detail. I just dont get why this even happen in the first place. Just because someones different doesn't give anyone the right to discriminate against them.

Dear Diary: today hasn’t gotten any better. i miss my family back home so much. I been separated from the ones i love. I have also been beaten and treated will so much disrespect. I dont understand why i was brought here in the first place. I have to work for people who treat me as if i was in hell. Ugh i pray to god that this will end someday and i hope he rescue me from this hell.
